According to a report by a major Florida newspaper, police officers are responsible for some of the state's worst speeding offenses, as well as a number of traffic wrecks, injuries and deaths.
The three-month investigation revealed that nearly 800 officers from across the state have been cited for driving at speeds of up to 130 mph on state highways, many of whom were off duty at the time. Since 2004, such driving has resulting in at least 320 crashes and 19 fatalities. One serious car accident uncovered by the investigation involved a Florida officer who collided with a college student, leaving the young man with permanent brain damage.

It is unfortunate that drivers need to be constantly reminded to be wary of small children playing and riding bikes near roads. While most drivers are vigilant and aware of their surroundings, unfortunately there are still too many accidents involving children.
One such car accident that happened in Orlando this week has left a 9-year-old boy in critical condition after he was hit by a car while riding his bike. According to police, the boy and his mother were crossing Orange Blossom Trail near the intersection with Wakulla Way when a northbound car being driven by a 19-year-old male hit the boy.

A Florida sheriff's deputy has been hospitalized following a car accident, according to information from the Florida Highway Patrol. Troopers with the patrol say that the serious car accident occurred at an intersection at approximately 6 a.m. as a sedan pulled through the intersection. The 61-year-old driver of the vehicle told investigators that his traffic light was flashing red at the time. A second driver, 45, also entered the intersection, forced to swerve in order to avoid the first vehicle. The second driver told police that she had a green light.
As the second driver swerved by the second, her vehicle slammed into the front of the deputy's patrol car. The collision caused glass to spray into the deputy's eyes, leaving him with serious injuries. Upon the arrival of emergency response personnel, the deputy was transported by helicopter to the Orlando Regional Medical Center for treatment. At last report, the deputy's condition was still unavailable to the media.

Officers with the Florida Highway Patrol say they are still conducting an investigation into a November crash that left a 76-year-old woman dead. The serious car accident reportedly occurred shortly after the victim left her boyfriend's house to walk her dog. After traveling about 700 feet from the home, investigators believe she was struck by an oncoming vehicle. Police allege that the vehicle was driven by the wife of a member of the county school board.
Police were informed of the accident when another driver called 911 to report a body on the side of the road. He told dispatchers that the victim appeared to have "passed out on the street," adding that she was bleeding from the mouth. The driver told police that he encountered another woman standing by the victim, but the woman informed him that she had not called 911.

A chain reaction accident in Florida has left one driver dead and a stretch of highway seriously damaged. Officers with the Florida Highway Patrol believe the serious car accident began when the driver of a log truck in the left-hand lane of the highway lost control of his vehicle, causing it to veer into the right-hand lane. The truck then flipped over, causing its load of logs to spill out across the roadway.
A 16-year-old girl driving a sedan could not avoid striking the logs, which caused her car to overturn. A mail truck following the sedan was also unable to avoid the pileup and crashed into the logs. Finally, a tractor-trailer hauling volatile chemicals collided with the other vehicles and logs, causing it to burst into flames. A series of five explosions followed, which police believe to have been caused by the rupture of several chemical tanks.

Three people are in the hospital in Florida, following a car wreck that police say was likely caused by drunk driving. According to crash investigators from the Florida Highway Patrol, the serious car accident occurred after a sedan carrying two men veered off the road when its driver failed to negotiate a sharp turn. The driver over-corrected, causing the vehicle to strike an oncoming SUV. Police said the collision was nearly head-on.
A witness claims to have been passed by the sedan just before the crash. He said that based on his own speed of around 50 miles per hour, the sedan could have been traveling as fast as 80 mph. The witness claimed that the sedan barely avoided a vehicle in the opposite lane before crashing moments later.
